This One

of all stars the most beautiful

[Sappho, Fragment 104b, Anne Carson, trans.]

this one, just now shining,
speaks to me of possibility,
saying:

it is no use to wish,
all that is yours will
in its due time come.

  1. This is beautiful...I want so much for it to be true.

  2. As both a wisher on stars and one who trusts due time, I'm not sure which has served me better... but either way, this *does* ring beautiful and true.

  3. Thank you both. I can honestly say that these Sappho poems are not coming from the same place as the others. The voice in them is coming through my fingers but I'm not intellectualizing them. Just typing. I agree with the due time theory however. The thing is that what you get, in time, is often not what you might have ever wanted or predicted. I am certain from what I've read of Sappho that she'd agree. Star wishing on the other hand is the solar system's great parlor trick, just look at all the winking.
